Bat Mitzvah girl suits
Mar 08th, 2008, 10:39am

I live in Northern Virginia and can't seem to find a single suit for a thirteen year old girl.  My daughter is 5'5" and 98 lbs. and wears about a junior size 1 or a girl's 12 or 14.  It's impossible to find one thing.  Any suggestions on where to look?  Party dresses are definitely not a problem.  We just need something appropriate for the service.

How about a ladies petite size 0 or 2--they should fit her, maybe with alittle tailoring--
try a few on in a department store, they usually have a big selection. Lord and taylor in NY has a ladies petite suit section.
Don't know if they're in VA-

At 5'5", she's probably too tall for a petite size.

Are most girls wearing suits or dresses for the service?

Most of the girls down here are wearing dresses.  I don't know if it's a regional thing or practical.  When is a 13 year old going to wear a suit again before they outgrow it?

I am 5'6" with long legs and often buy a petite 4. You would be surprised at the variability in the length. There are few petite suits cut in a way that is too short, either in the waist of the jacket or the length of the skirt or pants. Give it a try!!

Around here the girls seem to wear a suit or a dress for services and then change. (There was a whole recent thread on that!)

agree with MCMom's post--the advantage of a dress is that they can wear it after to someone else's BM!

We bought my DD a CW Design dress with short jacket for services. It had the look of a suit but also works as a party dress for other parties.

I don't think a "suit" is required for services. Perhaps, you can find a more conservative dress.

And I feel for you. The outfit for services for the girls is the hardest thing to find but it will happen!

Good Luck.

Couldn't find a suit in NY either. We opted for a dress with bolero jacket. This seems to be the trend.

Dresss and jacket yes. Haven't seen any suits. Skirt and fancy sweater is ok if the party is not right after or they are changing.

We bought dd a suit on alycedesigns.  Look under special occasions/contemporary suits.  We actually got the lavender one that pops up.  Of course it looks totally different on a 13 y.o.!  The skirt was perfect; had the tailor do temporary stitching on the jacket, so that when she grows up top, he can let it out.  I ordered it through a local dress shop who reps them; they took measurements, etc, because they know that designer.  They also said they would send it back if we didn't like it.

My daughter is tall and thin also - We did what Suebie85 did and bought a CW Designs dress with a matching jacket - It was a perfect fit and CW Designs makes a beautiful dress - You can also have one made for her by them off of your daughter's measurement and she can pick the materials and style she likes - I love their dresses since they fit so nicely

Check out the local discount stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx.  For DD BM she wanted a suit, but was also 'in between' sizes for womens suits.  We bought a suit the she liked, and after the seamstress was done with it, it looked like it was cutome tailored for her.  She was about a size 2 at the time, busty on top, we bought a size 8 suit and it was adjusted all around.  Great results, and most importantly, DD was very happy with it at the end.

I am in Maryland and most of the girls here get their suits from either Teens N Up in Baltimore (might be more of shlep for you than you want); On Cloud 9 in Potomac or Les Enfants in Bethesda.  Most of the girls here do wear suits.

Thanks, Mammado.  Do these suits tend to be extremely expensive?  My DD wants to change to a party dress for the luncheon, so I don't want to go overboard with either.

Thanks! I'll need to start looking soon enough and it's nice to know other places to try. I've heard a lot of girls go to Synchronicity in Pikesville and another friend mentioned Debs in Laurel and Bowie - don't know if there are other locations. JC Penney also has suits for juniors that aren't too expensive but I don't know if they're special enough for your own BM.

(just looked at debshops and there is one in Manassas, Fredericksburg, VA Beach, etc.)

So far most of the BM girls this year have worn suits on the bima. It's a conservative shul.

I just bought my daughter a couple party dresses off the $19.99 rack at Macys for the Sat night events.

The Macy's Junior department is a great place for cheap party dresses!!

Yes, they are on the expensive side.  When the seasons change On Cloud 9 runs amazing sales.  I believe they have some stuff on sale now.  Also, around mid - August, they have a lot of stuff on sale.  For DD1's Bat Mitzvah I got DD2's party dress there for $75!  It was a babs & betsy dress.

When we went to Synchronicity they had nothing that appealed to either me or my DD, plus the sales girl kept trying to push this really ugly tweed suit on my daughter!
I'll have to check out Debs for DD #2, I haven't heard of them.  Thanks for the info.!

Hi Andilee,
I am also in No. Virginia.  We ended up with two party dresses.  The more conservative one will be worn to service with a shrug made by a friend.  My DD will change into the other one at the venue after cocktail hour!

Regarding suits and dresses in general, it's probably best to buy full skirts or long skirts for the bima. It's hard for our girls to remember to sit in a lady-like position during the BM (before/after their parts) and that may inadvertently provide a view that those of us in the congregation shouldn't see. (Sorry - bad view yesterday morning on very sweet girl!)

Might also try Talbotts kids (I think they may go to size 18 or 20) as well as Talbotts petite or even regular.  If there's not one near you, you can try online.  Good luck!
