Title: Open House
Post by glutenfreeone on Mar 16th, 2012, 2:06pm

We are throwing our son a graduation party. Our invitations say it's an Open House. We are having a Regrets only at the bottom of the invitation.  We are; a catered meal; complete from salad to dessert. Our dinner is being served from beginning to end; so people can eat no matter what time they arrive. That was a suggestion from a close friend. Does an Open House automatically imply that you are serving dinner, or should you specify that on the invitation, and how? Also, if you suggest that the invitation should say Dinner served; how should that be worded, if the meal will be served throughout? Thank you so much!!!

Hi glutenfreeone,

What a soiree for your grad! I think it's great that you'll do regrets-only invites, it will alleviate a lot of headaches.

I would not assume that a sit-down dinner would be at an "Open House". I'm sure many would think of appetizers or a buffet, possibly, but a full dinner, maybe not.

I would definitely imply in your invite that a full meal will be served, but it is essential to imply that it can be consumed at any time - you don't want to discourage those who are not looking to attend a more formal event!

It sounds like you're going to have something similar to a catered buffet, but maybe not exactly buffet style.

You don't need to be fancy or specific on your invitations - you could simply say "Come Hungry!" or "Food Will Be Served". If you do want to be more specific, you could say something like "Come Early, Come Late - Just Bring Your Appetite!"

Good luck and congrats to your son! I hope the party goes smashingly.  ;D

I am planning an open house grad party too, but mine is not a full meal.
So on the invitation postcard that we sent out i said "snacks & schmoozin"
so that people would know it is not a full meal.
I think it is helpful to let people know...if it is dinner you could just say come anytime - dinner provided
