Bar/Bat Mitzvah Talk - OT-graduation gifts for my friends kids

Ha - I just signed on to see if anyone had a thread like this - and here it is - great minds! DS is graduating and other than big items - computer, etc. - he wants an idock equivalent for his android phone - but I have no idea what to get for other friends' kids - so looking for ideas. Gift cards are always a fall-back, but the kids really appreciate something concrete - as long as it's something they want...

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Talk - Assigned seating for middle schoolers

We had a few large tables (all the same size) with assigned seating for both DSs BM and it worked out well. DS sat with his closest friends, which I thought might insult some kids but the kids know who's close and who isn't. The rest were seated by groups-the neighbour kids, his dance friends, or their own school cliques. This way each table has something in common. Also, by assigning seats at this age, you can avoid clashes and arguments among the kids who don't get along. Like someone also mentioned, they're only sitting to eat. At most BMs the kids are up on the dance floor and they all sit at each other's table. It's just so that there's some kind of organization during dinner.

Situations like this one that involves a friend can be really awkward, when it comes to money. I am thinking $450. - $550.00 especially if at the end of the party she stays to help you take down the party decorations.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Talk - Torah Portion for Parent of Mitzvah Child?

At our conservative shul where bms are not shared, the BM can assign up to 3 of the 7 Torah portions to whomever they'd like, as long as the person is approved by the cantor as being proficient at chanting Torah and is Jewish. The other portions are reserved for "honored congregants". However, if the immediate family are members of the congregation, then the "honored congregant" spots can go to parents and siblings of the bm. For instance, by the time my youngest has his bm, my husband, dd, ds1 and ds2 will all chant Torah portions.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Talk - inviting local cousins?

Or, you could call each family - let them know that you will soon be mailing the invites.
Tell them your plans to have the younger kids sit with their parents during the celebration ... and that an option would be that their kids could stay at the hotel and you plan to hiring some older kids (ie college aged?) to watch a group of kids.
I will bet that several of the parents would rather NOT have their (unruly) kids there - and be happy to have a night with just their spouse/partner.
Also - the reason I suggest them staying at the hotel is so that they will not be running back and forth between the rooms during the evening.

Our Son

You are not today as you were yesterday,
Nor are we.
Something has occurred.

We sit with the congregation,
You stand alone on the bimah.
You lead the congregation,
We follow.
You sing, pray, speak,
We listen.

Not a mere echo of our sound,
You have words of your own.
The still, small voice of conscience stands alone
Stronger in you now than ever before.
A blessed distance between us,
You are ours but also your own.
You were called to the Torah,
Your name and our names interwoven,
You are not us,
We are not you,
But we are inseparable.
